Caulking: Types and Tips
Types:
Acrylic Latex or Siliconized – Best to use interior for gaps between trim, walls, ceilings, around windows, doors, even electrical outlets to prevent against hot or cold air drafts. Most acrylics are paintable.
100% Silicone– Best product to use for a waterproof barrier around toilets, bathtubs, and sinks. Even to guard against outdoor weather conditions around windows and doors. Paint will not adhere to 100% silicone caulking.
Tips:
-Old caulking needs to be removed.
-Cut the tip of the caulking tube at a 45 degree angle. The cut can be smaller or larger depending on the application. Keep in mind, smaller is easier and cleaner.
-Be sure not to caulk too slow or globs will build up and don’t move too quickly or there will be breaks in the bead of caulking.
-Smooth caulk out with a moistened cloth.
-Before starting any caulking, practice on a piece of scrap or cardboard to check for speed and accuracy.
