Caulking: Types and Tips

Types:

Acrylic Latex or Siliconized  Best to use interior for gaps between trim, walls, ceilings, around windows, doors,   even electrical outlets to prevent against hot or cold air drafts.  Most acrylics are paintable.

100% Silicone– Best product to use for a waterproof barrier around toilets, bathtubs, and sinks.  Even to guard against outdoor weather conditions around windows and doors.  Paint will not adhere to 100% silicone caulking.

Tips:

-Old caulking needs to be removed.

-Cut the tip of the caulking tube at a 45 degree angle.  The cut can be smaller or larger depending on the application. Keep in mind, smaller is easier and cleaner.

-Be sure not to caulk too slow or globs will build up and don’t move too quickly or there will be breaks in the bead of caulking.

-Smooth caulk out with a moistened cloth.

-Before starting any caulking, practice on a piece of scrap or cardboard to check for speed and accuracy.
